When an electronics development technician has carried out their circuit design for an application, the following step towards carrying out the product design is to put into the graphic details into a PC based graphical capture program. The graphic capture program, which is more often than not part of an EDA or electronic design automation, or printed circuit board computer automated design, software design package, would make a net list from the finished schematic which details each electrical connection b/w every electronic element.

This net list is utilized by the PCB or otherwise known as printed circuit board designer in the procedure of developing the PCB with the electronic design automation or printed circuit board computer aided design software. The completed PCB would offer the physical assembly & interconnection platform for the numerous electronic elements needed by the graphical.

The PCB is created up of one or more conductive layers of copper plating which is soldered to from the element pads & interconnection traces & 1 or more layers of non-conductive material for instance epoxy filled fiberglass to discrete the conductive copper layers & to offer the mechanical power for the board.

A single layer board will have elements over the peak side of the board & attaching traces over the base side of the board. A dual layer board can have elements on the top side or have elements on both the top & bottom sides of the board together with associating traces on both sides of the board. A manifold layer board will have either side with elements & traces together with a no. of internal layers utilized for interconnections & for voltage & ground plane layers.

The electronic design automation or printed circuit board CAD software offers the detailed info regarding the finished board design in a number of data files for every conductive layer, for instance top, bottom, & any internal layers. The Gerber File Format, called after the Gerber Scientific Instruments Firm, an expert in photoplatter fabrication, is the typical set-up for these data files.

The unique Gerber format matched with the EIA RS-274D standard & comprised a command file for every conductive coating & a tool account file. The command file comprised a series of small commands, all afterward a series of X & Y coordinates that will offer a photoplotter with the info to make a schematic representation. These command files turned out called Gerber files.

The tool account file, or crack file, described as the track line widths as well as dimensional data for all of the pads as well as geo shapes over the layer.

These data files of PC created info for the PCB design are then delivered to a PCB manufacturing firm to have the physical boards fabricated. The Gerber files comprise all the info essential for the PC controlled machines at the PCB, printed circuit board manufacturing houses to solder the copper layers to make the element pads & connection tracks, drill all needed holes, & cut the board to the needed size.

Because a printed circuit board might have from one to a lot of non-insulating layers, the earlier Gerber format EIA RS-274D always understood a series of command files, one for every printed circuit board layer, & one tool account file, or aperture file. In case the PCB manufacturing house can’t go through the aperture file format as delivered, then the aperture info will need to be reentered by hands.

The fresher Gerber format matches with EIA RS-274X & this format comprises the aperture info in the file headers as incorporated info for every command or Gerber file. This fresher format is typically known as X-Gerber. With all of the aperture info comprises within the header of the file, every X-Gerber file offers all of the info needed to manufacture the concerned part of the PCB layer.
